Since money can be quite tight when you start out, you can aim for precious Ores, and caves/hollow spots are the best spots for this. They not only save you the trouble of digging but also have some of the most valuable Ores. This includes the likes of Copper, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond. You can sell them for a quick profit.
The battery powers not only your Shovel but also your Jetpack, so make sure to keep upgrading it. Also, do not let it die out, as it can instantly kill you, making you lose all your Ores along with a bit of health.
Do note that as you keep upgrading the battery, the cost of charging it will also go up. So make sure to upgrade only if you have enough money.
Unless you are going for an achievement, you can upgrade your tools however you like, but I recommend upgrading the Shovel and the Drill first in early-game. Next, aim for Inventory, Battery, and finally, the Jetpack, as it can come in handy at times.
Upgrading the inventory is also important since you might end up losing the Ore if you dig it while your inventory is full. This will also end up wasting your battery.
It's no surprise that you are going to need Lamps in this game. Make sure to buy enough of them, as you cannot pick them up once they are placed. They are especially needed in case you get stuck in a hole somewhere since it can be hard to figure out where you are.
As you keep going deeper, you will come across moles, and unlike the real-life versions, moles in this game have great eyesight. If you get caught, they will immediately start chasing after you, and since you cannot fight them, your best bet is to outrun them.
Getting away from them is not that difficult as they are programmed to stop chasing after a certain point. Also, make sure to save at regular intervals, as it can not only help you when you get stuck but will also keep you from losing all your ores if you die or get caught by a mole.
